Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Daimyo Oak - Quercus dentata
The largest leaves of any oak belong to this species. Quercus dentata holds bold paddle shaped leaves 20 to 30cm long with rounded lobes, carried on stout twigs that give the bare winter tree a heavy sculptural line. Many of those leaves turn brown and stay on the tree into winter, which is either the reason to plant it or the reason not to, and either way it is a slow deliberate tree for a cool temperate garden with room.
Why Daimyo Oak
Leaf scale: Individual leaves are big enough to change the texture of a whole garden, coarse and dark with a felted underside.
Winter leaf hold: Dead foliage is retained on young wood well into winter, giving russet colour and some screening when everything else is bare.
Heavy branch line: Thick twigs and short internodes produce a chunky silhouette unlike the fine tracery of most oaks.
Autumn tone: Leaves move through yellow bronze to deep russet rather than a bright red.
Cold hardiness: Comfortable in the coldest parts of southern Australia, including highland frost hollows.
Ideal Applications
Cool climate lawn tree: Given decades and space it becomes a broad low branched specimen you plant for the next generation.
Rural entry planting: Suits homestead gates and driveway heads where scale and permanence matter.
Oak collections: Reads as completely distinct beside pin, English and scarlet oaks.
Autumn colour groupings: The russet tone works alongside maples and liquidambars rather than competing with them.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 14m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep well drained loam, neutral to slightly acid preferred; avoid waterlogged clay and salt laden coastal wind
Establishment Care: Give a slow deep soak weekly through the first two summers, aiming water at the edge of the root ball rather than the trunk. Mulch 100mm deep over a 2m circle and keep grass off the root zone for the first three years, because turf competition slows oaks badly.
