Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Engelmann Oak - Quercus engelmannii
One of the few true oaks that behaves itself in a dry Mediterranean climate, Quercus engelmannii carries leathery blue-grey leaves through summer without the irrigation most oaks demand. It builds a broad, low-branching crown slowly, so it is chosen for a property's long horizon rather than for a quick result. Across Adelaide, Perth and the drier inland districts it holds condition where English and pin oaks sulk.
Why Engelmann Oak
Dry Summer Tolerance: Once its roots are down it prefers to be left dry over summer, and resents being irrigated like a lawn tree.
Blue-Grey Foliage: The dull blue cast reads as cool grey from a distance and sits well against limestone, render and olive tones.
Broad Low Crown: Mature trees branch low and spread nearly as wide as they are tall, giving real shade rather than a narrow column.
Poor Soil Acceptance: Thin, rocky and gravelly ground suits it, and deep rich soil is not required.
Cold Hardiness: Comfortable through cold inland winters, tolerating frosts well below zero once established.
Ideal Applications
Dry Shade Tree: A single specimen on a large lawn or paddock edge that will not need summer water forever.
Rural Entry Planting: Spaced widely along an acreage driveway where a slow, permanent canopy is wanted.
Mediterranean Gardens: Sits naturally with olives, rosemary, lavender and gravel mulch.
Water Sensitive Design: Canopy cover for sites where summer irrigation is restricted or unavailable.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m for an informal grove or windbreak row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring, avoiding midsummer heat
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam, gravel or decomposed rock. It will not tolerate waterlogging, nor heavy summer irrigation once established.
Establishment Care: Water deeply but infrequently through the first two summers to drive roots down, then taper off almost entirely. Keep a coarse mulch ring clear of the trunk and avoid planting thirsty understorey inside the drip line.
