Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Bur Oak - Quercus macrocarpa
Bur oak is the toughest of the white oaks. Quercus macrocarpa comes from the prairie margins of central North America, so it copes with heat, drought, compaction and alkaline soil in a way most oaks do not, and it carries deeply lobed leaves and thick corky bark on a broad low branching frame. Its acorns are the largest of any oak, seated in a fringed mossy cup.
Why Bur Oak
Drought hardiness: A deep taproot and prairie origin make it one of the few oaks that holds up in dry inland summers once established.
Alkaline soil tolerance: It performs on limey and high pH soils that cause chlorosis in pin oak and scarlet oak.
Corky bark: Thick furrowed bark protects mature trunks and gives strong winter character.
Broad crown: Heavy low limbs spread wide, so a single tree shades a house frontage or a paddock corner.
Acorn character: Large acorns in a shaggy fringed cup are unmistakable and feed birds through autumn.
Ideal Applications
Homestead shade tree: One tree east or west of a house cuts summer heat load and lets winter sun through.
Wide avenue: Planted at generous spacing along a rural driveway it eventually meets overhead.
Parks and school grounds: Strong wood and low limb failure rates suit high traffic open space.
Regional street planting: A good choice where verges are wide and summers are hot and dry.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 8 to 10m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 12 to 18m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, from sandy loam to heavy clay loam and alkaline soils, provided water does not sit around the crown
Establishment Care: Water deeply but infrequently, roughly fortnightly through the first two summers, to encourage the taproot down rather than sideways. Mulch widely, keep the trunk flare exposed, and resist formative pruning beyond removing crossing or damaged wood for the first few years.
