Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Indian Hawthorn - Rhaphiolepis indica
Rhaphiolepis indica is the workhorse evergreen shrub of Australian coastal and suburban gardens, holding a dense rounded mound of leathery dark green leaves with no real maintenance. Clusters of small white to pale pink flowers cover it in spring, followed by blue-black berries. It is chosen over lillypilly for lower, tougher massing where psyllid problems and constant clipping are unwelcome.
Why Indian Hawthorn
Self Shaping: Naturally forms a neat dome, so it looks tidy without regular hedging.
Coastal Hardiness: Handles salt wind and sandy soils on beachside blocks without leaf burn.
Shade Flexibility: Flowers reasonably in part shade, unlike most flowering evergreens.
Spring Flower Flush: A heavy display of white to pink blossom in September and October.
Low Maintenance: Drought tolerant once established and largely free of pests in most districts.
Ideal Applications
Mass Planting: Blocks of plants used as a low maintenance ground layer in commercial landscapes.
Informal Low Hedge: A close planted row makes a 1 to 1.5m soft edge without formal clipping.
Coastal Garden Structure: Provides evergreen bulk in exposed seaside plantings.
Car Park and Verge Beds: Copes with reflected heat, restricted root space and irregular watering.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring
Soil & Drainage: Well drained soil of almost any type, from sand to improved clay, pH 5.5 to 7.5
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer, after which it needs very little supplementary irrigation. Prune immediately after flowering if shaping is required, and remove seedlings in areas near bushland since birds spread the berries.
