Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Indian Hawthorn - Rhaphiolepis intermedia
Rhaphiolepis intermedia is the workhorse of Australian mass planting: a dense, leathery-leaved evergreen that survives car park islands, coastal wind and clay just as readily as a suburban front garden. Spring brings a heavy flush of white flowers washed with pink, followed by blue-black berries. It is chosen over lilly pilly or box for low hedging where the site is hot, exposed and unlikely to be watered.
Why Indian Hawthorn
Salt and Wind Tolerance: It holds foliage right down to the ground in front line coastal positions that shred softer shrubs.
Dense Low Habit: Naturally mounding and twiggy, so it fills out without needing constant shearing to look solid.
Spring Flowering: A generous flush of scented white and pink bloom covers the bush from about September.
Clay Tolerance: It copes with heavy soils that kill most evergreen hedging, provided water does not pond around the crown.
Low Input: Largely free of serious pests, it needs one tidy up a year and little else.
Ideal Applications
Low Boundary Hedge: Clipped to 1m along a fence or driveway where a taller screen would block light.
Mass Planting: Repeated in drifts on batters and verges to hold ground and suppress weeds.
Coastal Gardens: A reliable structural evergreen within sight of salt spray.
Commercial Landscapes: Car parks, medians and forecourts where irrigation is minimal and maintenance is occasional.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 700mm to 1m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring in temperate zones, any mild period in warm districts
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across sand, loam and clay loam, best where water moves away freely. Avoid positions that stay saturated through winter.
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer, then weekly in the second, after which it will largely fend for itself. Mulch 75mm deep and tip prune after flowering to build density from the base up.
