Overview & Specifications

River Wattle Lime Magik - Acacia cognata ‘Lime Magik’
‘Lime Magik’ is a weeping selection of river wattle, Acacia cognata, grown for long, fine, bright lime-green phyllodes that trail from gently arching branches. It forms a soft, willowy small tree rather than the low mound of the species' dwarf forms, and it keeps that fresh colour through winter as well as summer. It is planted as a single feature for movement and light, or in a loose row where a clipped green hedge would feel too heavy.
Why River Wattle Lime Magik
Lime Foliage: Narrow, fine phyllodes in clear lime green lift a scheme of darker evergreens and read brightly even on overcast days.
Weeping Habit: Pendulous branchlets give a flowing, cascading outline that stirs with any air movement, a texture few native trees offer.
Soft Texture: The foliage is soft to the touch and the plant has no spines, so it sits comfortably beside paths, seating and play areas.
Creekside Origin: Selected from a species that grows wild along creeks in south-eastern New South Wales and eastern Victoria, so it is at home in Australian soils and seasons.
Fast Growth: A quick-growing wattle that builds a full, weeping crown in its first two or three years in the ground.
Ideal Applications
View-Line Specimen: A single tree at the end of a view line, beside water or against a dark wall, where its colour and movement are seen to advantage.
Soft Screening: Set out in a loose line, it filters a view rather than walling it off, softening a fence or boundary without the weight of a dense screen.
Native Garden Layering: Its lime tone bridges grey-leaved natives and dark greens, and it sits well with tussock grasses and boulders in a low-input Australian scheme.
Courtyards and Small Gardens: Its fine leaf and modest scale suit courtyards and compact blocks where a heavy canopy tree would overwhelm the space.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Moist but well-drained ground, sandy through to clay loam, across a wide pH range; mound heavy clay and avoid hollows that stay wet
Establishment Care: Give a thorough soak twice a week over the first summer and again in long dry spells, as this creekside species wants more moisture than most wattles. Keep mulch clear of the trunk to protect the collar from rot, and tip prune lightly after the spring flush to keep the weeping canopy full, since wattles reshoot poorly from bare old wood.
