Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pink Robinia - Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Decaisneana’
The pink form of black locust is a substantially larger tree than the small grafted robinias, and it needs to be sited accordingly. Robinia pseudoacacia 'Decaisneana' builds an upright, open canopy of ferny foliage and hangs long racemes of soft pink, sweetly scented flowers in late spring that pull bees in from a considerable distance. On tough, dry, worn out ground where almost nothing else will make a shade tree, it is very hard to beat.
Why Pink Robinia
Long Pink Racemes: Flower chains up to 200mm long drape the canopy in late spring, unusual in a tree of this size.
Strong Scent: Heavily perfumed and one of the best bee forage trees available for temperate Australia.
Tough Site Tolerance: Handles drought, salt, compaction and depleted soil without complaint.
Fast Shade: Reaches genuine shade tree proportions in well under a decade.
Armed Stems: Paired spines at the leaf nodes deter browsing stock, which suits rural planting but means it should be kept clear of paths and play areas.
Ideal Applications
Rural And Acreage Shade: Fast paddock and homestead shade where irrigation is not available.
Broad Avenue: Effective along a long drive at wide spacing, where its scale can be accommodated.
Site Reclamation: Nitrogen fixing roots improve poor and disturbed ground over time.
Pollinator Planting: A serious nectar source for honey production and for supporting bee populations.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Any free draining soil. It thrives on sand, gravel and poor clay and asks for no improvement, but will decline in waterlogged ground.
Establishment Care: Water through the first summer to settle the roots, then leave it entirely alone, as extra water and feed only produce weak brittle wood. It suckers strongly from the roots, so keep it well away from paving, pool surrounds and mown lawn, and give it shelter from severe wind.
