Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mop Top Robinia - Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Inermis’
This is a thornless, non-flowering form of Robinia pseudoacacia budded high onto a straight clear stem, so the plant arrives with its rounded head already formed and simply thickens from there. The head grows dense and symmetrical without any shaping, which is why it turns up so often in formal courtyards, car parks and matched rows. Choose it where a small deciduous tree needs to look identical to the one beside it and stay predictable for decades.
Why Mop Top Robinia
Self Forming Head: The dense rounded crown develops naturally from the graft, so no clipping is needed to hold the shape.
Thornless Wood: Unlike the wild black locust, this selection carries no spines, making it safe beside paths and parking bays.
Urban Toughness: It tolerates compacted, poor and alkaline soils, reflected heat and root restriction better than most ornamental trees.
Fine Ferny Foliage: Bright green pinnate leaves cast light dappled shade and colour softly yellow before dropping.
Fixed Trunk Height: The clear stem is set at grafting, so headroom under the canopy is known from day one.
Ideal Applications
Formal Courtyard Pairs: Two matched trees flanking an entry give instant symmetry in a small hard-paved space.
Street and Car Park Planting: The compact crown and clear trunk suit narrow verges and vehicle clearance requirements.
Matched Avenues: Rows stay remarkably uniform because every tree comes from the same clone at the same graft height.
Large Planters: Root restriction is tolerated well, which makes it workable on podiums and rooftop terraces.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a close row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Highly adaptable, including poor, sandy, compacted and alkaline soils, provided water does not sit around the roots
Establishment Care: Stake firmly for the first two years, since a heavy head on a slender stem catches wind before the trunk thickens. Water weekly through the first two summers and rub off any shoots that appear on the trunk or from the roots below the graft, as those revert to the thorny wild form.
Plant Details
Height: 4 to 6m, largely determined by the graft height
Width: 3 to 4m
Growth Rate: Moderate
Foliage: Deciduous
