Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mop Top Robinia (Standard) - Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Inermis’
Mop Top Robinia is a grafted tree, and everything useful about it follows from that: a dense ball of bright green pinnate foliage sitting on a clean, thornless trunk at a fixed height set by the graft. Robinia pseudoacacia 'Inermis' almost never flowers, which is precisely why it gets specified for paved courtyards, car parks and forecourts where petal and pod drop would be a nuisance. The head builds slowly and evenly, so a row of them stays matched for years without corrective pruning.
Why Mop Top Robinia
Fixed Head Height: The graft union sets the clearance, so headroom over paths and parking stays predictable.
Thornless Trunk: The 'Inermis' selection carries none of the vicious paired spines of the wild black locust.
No Flower Litter: It rarely flowers at all, so there are no petals, pods or seedlings to sweep off paving.
Urban Toughness: Copes with compacted fill, reflected glare, root restriction and long dry periods.
Dappled Shade: The fine pinnate leaf filters light rather than blocking it, so planting can continue underneath.
Ideal Applications
Paved Courtyard Grid: Repeated on a grid it delivers a formal green ceiling over hard surfaces.
Car Park And Verge: Handles the heat, compaction and restricted root run of parking bays and nature strips.
Formal Driveway Avenue: Matched heads at even spacing give an immediate sense of arrival.
Planter Boxes: One of the few trees that stays reliable long term in a large raised planter.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m in a row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Almost any free draining soil, including sand, rubble and compacted urban fill. Permanently wet ground is the only real exclusion.
Establishment Care: Stake firmly for the first two years, because the heavy grafted head catches wind before the roots anchor. Remove any shoots or suckers appearing below the graft union or from the roots as soon as you see them, since the rootstock is vigorous, thorny and unlike the top.
