Cuban Royal Palm - Roystonea regia
Nothing else in cultivation produces the smooth, pale, column-like trunk of Roystonea regia, swollen slightly at the base and again partway up, topped by a brilliant green crownshaft and a crown of enormous plumose fronds. It is the palm used for grand avenues throughout the tropics for good reason: the trunks are consistent, the crowns sit uniformly high, and the effect of a repeated row is unmatched. It needs genuine warmth, deep soil and water, and is not a palm for cool or frosty districts.
Why the Cuban Royal Palm
Architectural trunk: The smooth grey concrete-like column is the defining feature and stays clean without maintenance.
Green crownshaft: A glossy bright green shaft below the fronds provides colour contrast at the top of the trunk.
Self-cleaning: Old fronds detach and fall on their own, so no climbing or trimming is needed. Note that shed fronds are large and heavy, so allow clearance beneath.
Uniformity: Trunk and crown proportions are remarkably consistent, which is exactly what avenue planting requires.
Rapid growth in the tropics: In warm humid conditions with water and feed it gains height quickly.
Ideal Applications
Grand avenue planting: Rows along driveways and boulevards in Queensland and the Northern Territory.
Resort and hotel entries: The scale and formality suit large-format commercial landscapes.
Poolside and courtyard feature: A single palm gives height without occupying ground-level space.
Coastal tropical gardens: Handles humidity and moderate coastal exposure in frost-free zones.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m for a close grove; it does not screen at ground level
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: The warm months, ideally at the start of the wet season
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage; it is a heavy feeder and drinker
Establishment Care: Water deeply several times a week through the first year, as royal palms transplant best when never allowed to dry. Mulch widely, apply a complete palm fertiliser with magnesium and potassium two or three times a year, and brace newly installed palms until the root initiation zone has anchored.
