Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Dwarf Palmetto - Sabal minor
Sabal minor is a trunkless fan palm from the swamp forests and river flats of the south eastern United States, and it is arguably the most cold hardy palm in general cultivation. Stiff, blue-green, deeply divided fans rise straight from a subterranean stem, giving a low mound of foliage rather than a trunk and crown. Gardeners in Canberra, Ballarat, Hobart or the Southern Highlands plant it because it delivers palm texture in places where a bangalow or golden cane simply will not survive winter.
Why Dwarf Palmetto
Cold Hardiness: Handles hard frost and cold wet winters that kill nearly every other palm sold in Australia.
Trunkless Habit: Foliage starts at ground level, so it works as a large architectural groundcover rather than an overhead form.
Wet Ground Tolerance: Native to seasonally flooded forest, it accepts heavy soils and periodically saturated ground.
Shade Capable: Grows well in dappled shade beneath established canopy, which few palms of this hardiness manage.
Blue-Green Colour: The stiff glaucous fans give a cooler tone than the bright green of most cultivated palms.
Ideal Applications
Cool Climate Tropical Look: Combines with clumping bamboo, tree ferns and cannas for a lush effect in cold districts.
Understorey Massing: Planted in drifts beneath deciduous trees it holds evergreen structure through winter.
Rain Garden and Swale: Its tolerance of periodic inundation suits detention basins and damp low points.
Entry Bed Structure: A group of three gives permanent form in a front garden without ever outgrowing the space.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m for a continuous mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn, avoiding the depth of winter in the coldest districts
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, from moist clay to improved sand; performs best in soil that stays damp and does not mind poor drainage
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone moist through the first two summers, since this palm is far more sensitive to drought than to cold. Mulch 75mm deep with leaf litter or bark and be patient, as it invests in root growth for a season or two before visible top growth accelerates.
