Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Giant Sequoia - Sequoiadendron giganteum
The largest tree species on earth by volume, Sequoiadendron giganteum is planted for one reason: permanent, monumental scale. Young trees form a dense blue-green cone of scale-like foliage on a straight leader, and with age the trunk buttresses out and develops thick, fibrous, cinnamon-red bark. This is a tree for acreage, parkland, homesteads and cool climate estates, not for suburban blocks, and it must be sited with its ultimate size and root spread clearly in mind, well away from buildings, drains and services.
Why the Giant Sequoia
Monumental Scale: Grows into one of the largest trees possible in an Australian cool climate landscape.
Fibrous Red Bark: Thick spongy cinnamon bark that becomes deeply furrowed with age.
Formal Cone: Holds a naturally symmetrical conical crown for its first several decades.
Longevity: A multi-generational tree, planted as a legacy rather than a decade-long feature.
Cold and Snow Hardiness: Entirely comfortable with hard frost, wind and highland winters.
Ideal Applications
Parkland and Estate Planting: A single landmark tree on a broad lawn or approach.
Rural Homestead Avenue: Widely spaced along a long driveway on acreage.
Arboretum and Collection: A cornerstone specimen in a cool climate tree collection.
Memorial or Commemorative Tree: Its lifespan suits plantings intended to outlast their planters.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6m to 8m, and only on large properties
Spacing (feature/avenue): 12m to 15m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture-retentive but free-draining soil; requires reliable subsoil moisture and dislikes hot dry inland sites
Establishment Care: Water deeply and regularly for the first three summers, as young trees are far less drought tolerant than mature ones. Mulch a wide circle around the root zone clear of the trunk, keep grass and mowers well away from the base, and never remove the central leader.
