Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Peanut Tree - Sterculia quadrifida
An Australian dry rainforest tree with a long bush food history, Sterculia quadrifida is grown for the moment in late summer when its seed pods split: leathery boat shaped follicles open to a bright scarlet interior holding glossy black seeds that taste of peanut when roasted. The tree itself is open crowned and light limbed, with smooth pale grey bark and broad heart shaped leaves that drop briefly in the dry season.
Why Peanut Tree
Scarlet pods: The split follicles are the visual event of the year, held on the tree for weeks and visible from a distance.
Edible seed: Black seeds inside the pods are a traditional food across northern Australia and are eaten raw or roasted.
Open canopy: Light limbs and spaced branching let enough sun through for a full understorey planting.
Seasonal leaf drop: A short bare period in the dry lets winter sun onto a house or terrace.
Wildlife value: Seeds and flowers draw parrots, honeyeaters and butterflies in coastal and subtropical gardens.
Ideal Applications
Bush food planting: A centrepiece for edible native gardens alongside finger lime and Davidson plum.
Subtropical courtyard feature: The pale trunk and layered branching suit a contained space where the pods are seen closely.
Light shade over seating: Filtered canopy shade without the density that kills a lawn beneath.
Rainforest edge revegetation: Establishes readily on the sunny margin of a regenerating patch.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early wet season in the tropics and subtropics
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy loam to volcanic loam; it will not tolerate cold wet soil or prolonged waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first dry season and mulch heavily to 100mm, keeping mulch off the trunk. Protect young plants from frost entirely and from strong wind until the trunk has caliper, as juvenile wood is soft.
