Bird of Paradise (Multi-Stem) - Strelitzia reginae
Supplied as a multi-stem clump, this is several established fans of Strelitzia reginae grown together, which matters because bird of paradise flowers best when the clump is mature and congested rather than newly divided. The plant itself is a clumping perennial of grey green paddle leaves on long stiff stalks, punctuated by the orange and blue crane headed flowers that give it its name. It is one of the toughest architectural plants available for hot, coastal, low water Australian gardens.
Why Bird of Paradise
Flowers sooner: A multi fan clump reaches the congested state that triggers heavy flowering years ahead of a single division.
Long flowering season: Blooms come mainly through autumn, winter and spring in warm districts, with sporadic flowers at other times.
Architectural leaf: Stiff grey green paddles held on upright stalks give strong structure with no pruning at all.
Coastal and drought hardy: Tolerates salt wind, sandy soil and extended dry once the fleshy roots are established.
Cut flowers: Blooms last two weeks or more in a vase, which few garden flowers manage.
Ideal Applications
Poolside and coastal beds: Handles reflected heat, salt and wind while keeping a clean structural outline.
Mass planted drift: Repeated clumps along a driveway or fence line give a low maintenance evergreen band.
Feature container: Performs and flowers well in a large pot, where root restriction actually encourages blooming.
Modern architectural planting: Reads well against rendered walls, dark cladding and gravel or concrete surfaces.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m for a continuous mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring through summer while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy loam enriched with compost; the fleshy roots rot in heavy wet soil
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer to settle the roots, then only during extended dry spells. Feed in spring and again in mid summer with a complete fertiliser, and resist the urge to divide the clump, because dividing resets flowering by several years.
