Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Japanese Snowbell - Styrax japonicus
Styrax japonicus is a small deciduous tree with strongly horizontal branching, and in late spring the entire underside of those layered branches is hung with white bell flowers on slender stalks. Because the flowers face downward, it is a tree best appreciated from beneath or from below on a slope, which is exactly how good designers place it. It suits cool and cool-temperate Australian gardens, and it is a genuinely small tree, which makes it one of the few flowering specimens safe to plant close to a courtyard or house.
Why the Japanese Snowbell
Pendulous white bells: Hundreds of lightly fragrant bell flowers hang below the branches in late spring and early summer.
Tiered branching: Naturally horizontal branch layers give a refined, almost Japanese garden structure even when bare.
Modest final size: Stays small enough for courtyards and small back gardens without needing containment.
Clean habit: Small leaves and light litter make it well suited to planting near paving and seating.
Autumn tone: Foliage turns soft yellow before falling, extending the seasonal interest.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard specimen: Small enough to sit close to the house and be viewed from within.
Above a path or terrace: Planted where you walk beneath it so the hanging flowers are seen from below.
Woodland edge planting: Sits naturally at the transition between larger trees and shrub planting.
Feature in a cool-climate garden: Excellent in the Adelaide Hills, the Dandenongs, the Blue Mountains, Canberra and Tasmania.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in a loose row; it is not a screening tree
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Moist, free draining, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter; it dislikes alkaline soil and dries out badly in shallow ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers because young trees are intolerant of drying out. Keep a cool root run with 75mm of organic mulch, site it out of hot dry afternoon wind, and prune only lightly after flowering to preserve the layered branch structure.
