Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Turpentine Tree - Syncarpia glomulifera
Turpentine is one of the great east coast hardwoods, a tall straight forest tree wrapped in thick fibrous bark that insulates it against fire, producing a timber so durable it was used for wharf piles because marine borers will not attack it. Syncarpia glomulifera carries dark green leaves in whorls of four with white felted undersides, so the canopy flickers silver in wind, and it produces fused clusters of cream flowers through spring and summer. In a landscape it delivers dense permanent shade and a very solid trunk.
Why Turpentine Tree
Fibrous Insulating Bark: Thick stringy bark protects the trunk and gives the species genuine fire resistance.
Whorled Silver-Backed Leaves: Leaves in groups of four with pale undersides create a distinctive two-tone canopy in wind.
Dense Evergreen Shade: Heavier canopy than most eucalypts, so it shades rather than dapples.
Wide Soil Tolerance: Grows on sandstone, shale and clay from the coast through to the ranges.
Habitat Value: Nectar for birds and insects, and hollows and rough bark for wildlife as it ages.
Ideal Applications
Large Property Shade: A long-lived canopy tree for acreage with space well clear of buildings.
Coastal Bushland Regeneration: A structural species in wet and dry sclerophyll restoration in NSW and Queensland.
Park and School Ground Canopy: Solid, wind firm and low in limb drop compared to many eucalypts.
Shelter Rows: Dense foliage makes it an effective windbreak component on larger blocks.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 14m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring on the east coast
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across sandstone, shale, clay and loam, preferring reasonable depth and moisture with free drainage. It is not suited to permanently waterlogged ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply every ten to fourteen days through the first two summers, as it establishes more slowly than a eucalypt of similar size. Mulch a wide ring clear of the trunk, keep grass competition down for two seasons, and allow generous clearance from structures given its mature scale.
