Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Royal Purple Lilac - Syringa x hyacinthiflora ‘Royal Purple’
Syringa x hyacinthiflora ‘Royal Purple’ is an early flowering hybrid lilac that opens deep purple panicles a week or two ahead of the common lilacs, with the heavy scent the genus is grown for. The hyacinthiflora hybrids were bred to flower with a lower winter chill requirement than Syringa vulgaris, which is why this group performs in Australian cool temperate and tableland gardens rather than only in the coldest districts. It is a plant chosen for a fortnight of scent and colour that nothing else replicates.
Why Royal Purple Lilac
Deep flower colour: The panicles hold a saturated purple that does not wash out to mauve as the flowers age.
Early season: It flowers ahead of the common lilacs, extending the lilac season when planted alongside them.
Lower chill requirement: The hyacinthiflora parentage means it sets flower in districts where vulgaris types stay stubbornly green.
Strong fragrance: Scent carries well beyond the plant, which is why it is placed near paths, windows and outdoor seating.
Upright frame: At 3 to 4m tall and 2 to 3m wide it holds a defined vase shape rather than sprawling into surrounding beds.
Ideal Applications
Cottage and cool climate border: It supplies the tall flowering backbone behind perennials and roses in a traditional mixed border.
Fragrance planting: Sited beside a doorway, path or window it delivers scent into the spaces people actually occupy.
Informal boundary run: Planted at 2 to 2.5m centres it makes a deciduous flowering screen that opens the winter sun back up.
Cutting garden: Long stemmed panicles cut well for the house, and cutting doubles as the thinning the plant needs.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m apart
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m apart
Best Planting Season: Winter, while the plant is fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and no tolerance for waterlogged ground
Establishment Care: Give a deep soak weekly across the first two summers rather than frequent shallow watering, and mulch to 75mm keeping clear of the stems. Remove spent flower heads and thin out older wood after flowering to keep the bush producing strong new flowering shoots.
