Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Yarrabah Satinash - Syzygium angophoroides
Syzygium angophoroides is a north Queensland rainforest satinash from swampy creek margins and seasonally wet lowlands, which explains its unusual tolerance of heavy, poorly drained ground. It carries dense, glossy dark foliage flushed coppery-pink on new growth, fluffy cream flowers, and a flaky mottled bark that gives it the angophora-like name. In cultivation it is grown mainly as a fast, dense, tall screen for warm humid districts where lilly pilly psyllid damage on other species is a nuisance.
Why Yarrabah Satinash
Wet Feet Tolerance: Naturally a swamp margin species, it accepts damp and periodically waterlogged soils that kill most screening trees.
Coloured New Growth: Flushes of bronze to pink new leaves appear several times through the warm season.
Dense Habit: Holds foliage low and close, giving a solid visual barrier rather than an open canopy.
Flaky Feature Bark: Mottled shedding bark distinguishes it from the smooth-barked satinashes.
Bird Value: Cream brush flowers and fleshy fruit bring honeyeaters and fruit-eating birds into the garden.
Ideal Applications
Tall Boundary Screen: Planted in a row it reaches useful screening height quickly in coastal Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Creek and Drainage Line Planting: Suited to the damp edges of watercourses and detention basins on tropical and subtropical sites.
Rainforest Restoration: Used in wet lowland revegetation as a fast-establishing canopy species.
Large Garden Shade Tree: Given room, it develops into a broad shade tree with a clean glossy canopy.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m
Best Planting Season: Start of the wet season, or spring in subtropical districts
Soil & Drainage: Moisture-retentive loam or clay loam; unusually tolerant of heavy and seasonally wet soils, less happy on hot dry sand
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly for the first two summers so the tree never checks, because drought stress at this stage shows as thin patchy screening for years. Mulch to 100mm with coarse bark and tip prune lightly in the first two seasons to encourage branching low on the stem.
