Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Rose Apple - Syzygium jambos
Rose Apple earns its name from the fruit: pale creamy-yellow, hollow and crisp, tasting and smelling distinctly of rose water. Syzygium jambos is a fast, densely canopied evergreen with long glossy leaves and showy cream flowers made almost entirely of stamens, which sit like powder puffs across the canopy in spring. It is grown both as a productive tree and as quick, heavy screening in warm coastal gardens, and its vigour means it should be sited where it can be kept in check.
Why the Rose Apple
Rose Scented Fruit: Crisp hollow fruit with a distinctive rose water perfume, eaten fresh or preserved.
Powder Puff Flowers: Large cream stamen bundles that attract bees and honeyeaters.
Dense Canopy: Heavy evergreen cover that makes it useful for shade and screening.
Rapid Growth: Reaches useful size faster than most fruiting evergreens.
Coppery New Growth: Fresh leaves flush bronze-pink before hardening to glossy green.
Ideal Applications
Fast Boundary Screen: Planted in a row to close a boundary quickly in subtropical gardens.
Shade and Fruit Tree: One tree covers both roles on a warm-climate suburban block.
Edible Landscape Backbone: Anchors a productive garden with permanent evergreen structure.
Windbreak Row: Dense growth filters wind on exposed coastal and rural sites.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5m to 3.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5m to 7m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, free-draining soil with good summer moisture; tolerates a range of soils but not prolonged waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers to build a strong root system before the top growth accelerates. Mulch to 75mm clear of the trunk, feed in spring and again after harvest, and prune annually after fruiting to control size and keep the canopy open.
