Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Paperbark Satinash - Syzygium papyraceum
The distinguishing feature of Syzygium papyraceum is its bark: thin, papery, orange-brown sheets that peel from a clean straight trunk, unusual in a genus otherwise known for smooth or flaky stems. It comes from the wet tropical uplands of far north Queensland, and in cultivation makes an upright, densely leafed tree with pink-bronze new growth, fluffy white flowers and clusters of purple fruit. It is chosen where a client wants a native rainforest tree that offers trunk interest as well as canopy.
Why Paperbark Satinash
Papery Peeling Bark: Sheets of coppery paperbark make the trunk a feature worth uplighting.
Pink New Growth: Successive flushes of pink to bronze foliage keep colour in the canopy through the growing season.
Purple Fruit: Deep mauve to purple berries follow flowering and attract fruit-eating birds.
Upright Form: Grows with a strong central trunk and a relatively narrow crown compared with many satinashes.
Rainforest Origin: Adapted to high rainfall and humidity, so it performs in wet coastal north Queensland where drier natives struggle.
Ideal Applications
Feature Trunk Specimen: Positioned near a path or entry where the bark can be seen and touched.
Tropical Screening Row: Its density and upright habit suit a boundary planting on a humid coastal block.
Habitat and Revegetation Planting: A valid choice for restoring upland and lowland wet tropical vegetation within its natural range.
Courtyard Canopy: Provides high shade over a tropical courtyard without an overly wide crown.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m
Best Planting Season: Early wet season in the tropics, or spring in subtropical districts
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil with free drainage; needs consistent moisture and dislikes hot dry exposed sites
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist for the first two years, watering deeply two or three times a week through any dry season. Mulch heavily to 100mm with leaf litter or coarse bark and shelter young trees from strong wind and frost, which they will not tolerate.
