Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Lilly Pilly - Syzygium smithii
This is the original lilly pilly, the east coast rainforest species that most of the named screening cultivars were selected from. Syzygium smithii carries glossy dark leaves with coppery new growth, fluffy cream flowers in summer and clusters of white to mauve edible berries afterwards, and critically it shows strong natural resistance to psyllid, the sap-sucking insect that pits and puckers the leaves of other lilly pillies. Left unpruned it makes a solid small tree. Clipped, it is the standard hedge of coastal Australian gardens.
Why Lilly Pilly
Psyllid Resistance: Far less prone to the leaf pimpling that ruins the appearance of susceptible lilly pilly types.
Coppery Flush: Each growth cycle produces bronze-pink new leaves that harden to deep glossy green.
Fast Screening: Reaches useful privacy height quickly and stays dense from the ground up.
Edible Berries: The white to mauve fruit is edible, tart, and popular with birds and children alike.
Clips At Any Age: Reshoots readily from old wood, so an overgrown plant can be cut back and recovered.
Ideal Applications
Boundary Hedge: The default clipped native hedge for suburban fence lines along the east coast.
Tall Privacy Screen: Left semi-formal it will block a two storey outlook within a few seasons.
Rainforest Garden: Sits naturally as the canopy layer above ferns, ginger and native violets.
Coastal Windbreak: Thick leathery foliage handles salt-laden wind in second-row coastal gardens.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn. Avoid winter planting in frost prone gardens
Soil & Drainage: Moist, well drained soil rich in organic matter. It will handle clay that drains, but not standing water, and it appreciates a thick mulch layer year round.
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer, then weekly in the second. Trim lightly three times a year rather than once hard, because frequent light trimming is what produces a hedge that is dense right to the base.
