Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Damson Plum - Terminalia sericocarpa
Terminalia sericocarpa is a large rainforest tree of the far north with the tiered, horizontally layered branching that gives the whole genus its distinctive pagoda silhouette. It grows fast, drops its leaves briefly at the end of the dry with a flush of red and yellow before refoliating, and carries heavy crops of purple black fleshy fruit taken by cassowaries, pigeons and flying foxes. This is a tree for space: on acreage or a large block it delivers real canopy in a short time.
Why Damson Plum
Branch Architecture: The tiered horizontal branching pattern gives a strongly sculptural outline year round.
Growth Speed: One of the faster large rainforest trees, closing canopy on a bare site quickly.
Seasonal Leaf Colour: A brief dry season drop is preceded by red and yellow tones, unusual in tropical Australia.
Wildlife Feeding: The purple black fruit is a significant food resource for cassowaries and large fruit pigeons.
Shade Quality: The layered canopy throws broad, even shade over a large ground area.
Ideal Applications
Acreage shade tree: Given room, it becomes the dominant shade structure on a rural or large suburban block.
Rainforest canopy planting: Used as an upper canopy species over smaller rainforest trees and palms.
Park and reserve planting: Suited to large public landscapes in tropical councils.
Cassowary habitat work: A priority food tree in wet tropics revegetation projects.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening tree; 6m centres in a shelter row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 14m centres, keeping well clear of buildings and services
Best Planting Season: Early wet season in the tropics; spring to early summer in the warm subtropics
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, free draining soil; it grows fastest with good depth and organic matter
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two dry seasons to drive roots down before the tree carries a full canopy. Mulch widely to 100mm and formative prune in the first three years to keep a single dominant leader.
