Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Silver Germander (Topiary Ball) - Teucrium fruticans
Clipped as a ball, Teucrium fruticans is one of the fastest ways to get silver structure into a hot dry garden. The stems are white felted and the small leaves grey above with white undersides, so the sphere holds colour year round, and pale lavender-blue flowers appear over a long season through spring and summer. It regrows readily from hard cuts, which separates it from silver plants that go bare and stay bare.
Why Silver Germander
Silver Year Round: Felted stems and grey leaves keep the ball pale even in the depths of winter.
Fast Response to Clipping: New growth fills a trimmed surface within weeks in the growing season.
Renovation Tolerance: It breaks readily from old wood, so an overgrown ball can be cut back hard and rebuilt.
Long Flowering: Soft lavender-blue lipped flowers appear on and off from spring through summer.
Coastal and Dry Hardiness: Salt wind, poor soil and drought suit it better than good conditions do.
Ideal Applications
Repeated Balls: A run of silver spheres punctuating a formal bed or gravel garden.
Doorway Pots: A matched pair in containers where the silver reads against render or stone.
Low Silver Hedge: Planted closer together and clipped as a continuous edge.
Mediterranean Border: Structure among lavender, rosemary, santolina and olives.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m for a run of balls, or 600 to 800mm for a clipped low hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy, gravelly or limestone soils. Heavy wet clay causes root rot and sudden death.
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first two months and then only occasionally, since overwatering produces soft open growth that will not hold a shape. Trim two to four times through the growing season, always leaving some foliage on each cut stem, and renovate hard in early spring if the ball opens up.
