Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Golden Biota - Thuja orientalis ‘Aurea Nana’
A fixture of Australian gardens for generations, ‘Aurea Nana’ forms a tight golden egg of foliage held in vertical flattened sprays, dense enough to read as a solid shape from the first season. Now botanically placed in Platycladus, this dwarf biota is far more heat and drought tolerant than its soft appearance suggests, which is why it holds on in hot western suburb front gardens where other conifers cook. Winter deepens the gold towards bronze before spring returns it to bright yellow green.
Why Golden Biota
Golden Foliage: A genuine warm yellow gold in full sun, brightest on the outer growth.
Neat Egg Shape: It forms a rounded upright oval on its own and holds it for years unpruned.
Heat and Drought Tolerance: Long hot summers and reflected heat off paths and walls do not faze it.
Compact Scale: Small enough for a front garden, a rockery or a pot without ever crowding a path.
Vertical Sprays: Foliage arranged in flat upright fans, giving a fine and distinctly formal texture.
Ideal Applications
Low Formal Hedge: Planted close for an edging hedge under a metre.
Entry Pair: Matched plants either side of a door, gate or path.
Rockery Accent: A gold vertical among stone and low water groundcovers.
Terrace Pots: Container grown in hot exposed positions where watering is occasional.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m for a low clipped run
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Well drained loam or sandy soil of any fertility. Heavy clay that stays wet through winter is the one thing it will not survive.
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer to settle it in, then only occasionally, as established plants handle long dry spells. Trim just the current season's soft growth in late spring if a tighter shape is wanted, and never cut back into bare interior wood.
