Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Monastery Bamboo - Thyrsostachys siamensis
Named for its long use around temples in Thailand, Thyrsostachys siamensis forms one of the tightest clumps of any timber bamboo, with slender culms wrapped in persistent pale leaf sheaths and a fine, feathery top. The result is a narrow vertical column of foliage rather than a spreading thicket. It is the bamboo to specify when the planting space is genuinely tight and drought is a factor.
Why Monastery Bamboo
Very Tight Clump: One of the most compact clumping bamboos available, holding to around 1.5 to 2.5m across.
Persistent Sheaths: Pale culm sheaths remain attached, giving the stems a distinctive banded appearance.
Drought Hardiness: More tolerant of dry periods than most tropical clumpers once established.
Fine Leaf Texture: Small delicate leaves give a soft moving canopy with no heavy visual mass.
Dense to the Ground: Culms are packed closely, so screening is effective at low level as well as high.
Ideal Applications
Narrow Side Passage Screening: Fits a 1.5m wide bed and still screens well above fence height.
Formal Bamboo Row: Repeated at even spacing for a disciplined vertical rhythm along a wall.
Courtyard Feature: A single clump in a raised bed gives movement and sound in a paved space.
Large Container Planting: Its restrained root system suits a big pot better than most timber bamboos.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring through summer
Soil & Drainage: Well drained soil with organic matter, tolerates poorer and drier ground than most bamboos
Establishment Care: Water two to three times a week for the first summer to build the root mass, then weekly. Feed in spring with a nitrogen rich fertiliser, mulch heavily, and remove spent culms at ground level each year to keep the clump looking fresh.
