Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Tiger Grass - Thysanolaena latifolia
Tiger grass does the job of a screening bamboo without the running rhizome that causes so much trouble. Thysanolaena latifolia is a true clumping grass that throws up cane-like stems 2 to 3m tall clothed in broad bamboo-like leaves, filling a boundary in one or two growing seasons and staying exactly where it is planted. In late summer it carries large open plumes that catch light and move in the slightest breeze.
Why Tiger Grass
Clumping Root System: It expands slowly outward from a central crown and does not run, so no root barrier is required.
Rapid Screen: A row planted in spring will typically give useful screening by the following summer in a warm climate.
Broad Leaf Blades: Leaves are far wider than most ornamental grasses, giving a lush tropical read rather than a fine meadow texture.
Autumn Plumes: Large branched flower heads rise above the foliage in late summer and autumn, ageing to soft buff.
Wind Tolerance: The flexible canes bend rather than snap, which suits exposed coastal and hilltop boundaries.
Ideal Applications
Boundary Screening: A single row blocks a neighbouring window or fence line at a height a hedge would take years to reach.
Poolside and Pool Fence Softening: The tall arching habit disguises glass and metal pool fencing without dropping heavy litter.
Driveway and Entry Framing: Massed either side of a drive to create a soft green corridor.
Large Planters: Works in substantial raised planters and troughs on terraces where in ground planting is not possible.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m for a solid screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m so each clump keeps its arching shape
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer, giving a full warm season of growth before winter
Soil & Drainage: Fertile, moisture retentive soil with good drainage; it responds strongly to compost and regular feeding
Establishment Care: Water deeply two to three times a week through the first summer, as the fast top growth demands steady moisture. Cut the whole clump back hard in late winter to remove tired or frost burnt canes, then feed and mulch so the spring flush comes away clean.
