Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Small Leaf Linden - Tilia cordata
The small leaf linden is one of the most disciplined avenue trees available: a neat pyramidal crown when young that fills into a dense dome, clothed in heart shaped leaves that turn clean butter yellow in autumn. Tilia cordata also takes pleaching and pollarding better than almost any other deciduous tree, which is why it appears in formal European gardens and increasingly in Australian streetscapes and estate driveways. In early summer the small creamy flowers scent the air and draw bees in numbers.
Why Small Leaf Linden
Formal Uniformity: Trees grow with a consistent shape and single leader, so an avenue matches instead of drifting out of line.
Trainable Structure: It accepts pleaching, pollarding and hedge on stilts treatments and reshoots reliably after hard cuts.
Fragrant Summer Flowers: Creamy yellow flowers appear in early summer and are strongly scented and heavily worked by bees.
Reliable Autumn Colour: Foliage turns a clean yellow before falling, without the unpredictability of some deciduous exotics.
Practical Note on Aphids: Lindens can carry aphids that drip honeydew, so it is worth avoiding positions directly over parked cars and outdoor seating.
Ideal Applications
Driveway Avenue: Matched trees down a long entry give the strongest formal statement this species can make.
Pleached Screen: Trained on wires above a fence, it delivers privacy at first floor level without ground level bulk.
Street and Parkland Tree: A dense summer canopy with a clean winter frame and a manageable habit.
Shade Over Lawn: The domed crown throws deep, even shade for outdoor living areas in summer, then lets winter sun through.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5m to 3.5m for a pleached row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8m to 10m
Best Planting Season: Winter dormancy is ideal, autumn and early spring are both suitable
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture retentive loam or clay loam with reasonable drainage; it tolerates limey soils but dislikes hot, dry, shallow ground
Establishment Care: Advanced lindens need consistent deep watering through the first three summers, as they show stress in dry heat before most other avenue trees. Mulch a wide ring, keep turf back from the trunk, and complete any formative or pleaching cuts while the tree is dormant.
