Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sterling Silver Linden - Tilia tomentosa ‘Sterdell’
Silver linden earns its name on windy days, when the white felted undersides of the leaves flip over and the whole canopy shimmers. Tilia tomentosa ‘Sterdell’ is a selected form with a dense, evenly pyramidal crown and a strong central leader, which is why it appears so often in avenue and street tree specifications. It also handles heat, drought and alkaline soil considerably better than the common lindens.
Why Sterling Silver Linden
Two Toned Foliage: Dark green above and white felted below, so the crown flashes silver in any breeze.
Consistent Form: Broadly pyramidal and uniform tree to tree, which is what makes a formal avenue read as one line.
Urban Tolerance: Copes with compacted soil, reflected heat, alkalinity and vehicle pollution.
Fragrant Flowers: Small creamy yellow flowers in early summer carry a strong honey scent through the garden.
Autumn Colour: Clear butter yellow across the whole crown before leaf fall.
Ideal Applications
Formal avenue: The classic use, repeated at even spacings down a drive or boulevard.
Street planting: Suits wide verges and median strips where there is room for a full crown.
Large lawn shade: A single mature tree shades a substantial area of open ground.
Pleached screen: Limes take pleaching and clipping well, forming a raised hedge on clear stems.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5-6m for a pleached or clipped row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8-12m
Best Planting Season: Winter and early spring while dormant, autumn in mild districts
Soil & Drainage: Deep loam preferred, tolerant of clay and alkaline soils where drainage is adequate
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, tapering off as the crown fills out. Maintain a mulched, grass free circle at least 1.5m across and keep the central leader intact during formative pruning.
