Chusan Palm - Trachycarpus fortunei
The Chusan or windmill palm is the palm for cold gardens. Trachycarpus fortunei comes from the mountains of central and eastern China and tolerates frost well below anything a subtropical palm would survive, which is why it works in Canberra, the Blue Mountains, Tasmania and the cooler parts of Victoria. It carries stiff, deeply divided fan leaves on a slender trunk wrapped in coarse brown fibre, giving a tropical outline in a climate that will not grow tropical plants.
Why Chusan Palm
Cold Hardiness: The most frost-tolerant trunking palm in general cultivation, handling severe frost once established.
Narrow Crown: A compact head of only 2.5 to 3m makes it usable in side gardens and light wells where other palms cannot fit.
Fibrous Trunk: The hairy brown trunk sheath is a feature in itself and needs no cleaning to look right.
Shade Tolerant: It grows well in part shade, unlike most palms that demand open sun.
Wind Note: Hot dry wind shreds the leaves, so a sheltered position keeps the crown looking clean in inland districts.
Ideal Applications
Cool Climate Tropical Look: Delivers a palm silhouette in gardens far too cold for anything else.
Narrow Side Gardens: The small crown diameter suits confined spaces between buildings and fences.
Grouped Plantings: Three or five at staggered heights build a convincing grove effect.
Courtyards and Light Wells: Tolerates the reduced light of enclosed spaces without stretching badly.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5-2.5m when grouped
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3-4m
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn, into warming soil
Soil & Drainage: Moisture-retentive but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It is adaptable across a wide pH range and tolerates clay if drainage is improved.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, since this palm prefers steady moisture over dry cycles. Mulch generously out to the crown spread but never against the trunk fibre, and feed with a palm fertiliser in spring and mid summer to keep the leaves large and evenly green.
