Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Dwarf Chusan Palm - Trachycarpus fortunei var. wagnerianus
Known to growers as the Waggie, this is the compact, stiff leaved form of Trachycarpus fortunei, with smaller rigid fronds that do not tatter and flop the way the standard chusan palm does. That single difference makes it the most reliable fan palm for windy and exposed Australian sites, and it carries the same remarkable cold tolerance as the species. It is the palm to use where a tropical silhouette is wanted in Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart or the tablelands.
Why Dwarf Chusan Palm
Wind Resistance: Short, stiff, deeply held leaf segments resist shredding on coastal and elevated sites.
Cold Hardiness: Among the hardiest palms in cultivation, unbothered by hard frost and light snow.
Compact Crown: A tighter, neater head than the species, so it fits narrow beds and courtyards.
Fibrous Trunk: The hairy brown trunk fibre is a texture feature in itself and needs no cleaning.
Slow and Predictable: Unhurried growth means it stays in scale for many years without outgrowing its position.
Ideal Applications
Cool Climate Tropical Effect: Delivers a palm silhouette in southern cities where most palms will not survive winter.
Exposed Coastal Gardens: Holds tidy foliage in salt laden wind that ruins softer palms.
Narrow Side Gardens: The compact crown suits passages and light wells between buildings.
Repeated Container Planting: Long lived in large pots on terraces, roof gardens and forecourts.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for a repeated row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3.5m as separated specimens
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer once soil has warmed
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable, but best in a moist, humus rich, free draining soil. Avoid sites where winter water sits around the base.
Establishment Care: Water regularly through the first two summers, as the root system is fine and slow to extend. Mulch generously with composted bark, feed with a palm specific fertiliser in spring and again in summer, and simply remove old fronds at the base as they brown.
