Camperdown Elm - Ulmus glabra ‘Camperdownii’
Grafted onto a straight stem, this weeping selection of the European wych elm builds something no other tree quite matches: a dense, mushroom-shaped dome of contorted branches that hang to the ground and enclose a hollow, shaded space beneath. Ulmus glabra ‘Camperdownii’ has large, rough-textured leaves that cast heavy summer shade and turn clear yellow in autumn, and once bare the twisted branch architecture becomes the feature. It is a cool climate tree, at home in Victoria, Tasmania, the Adelaide Hills, the southern tablelands and similar districts.
Why the Camperdown Elm
Umbrella Habit: Branches arch out and weep straight down, forming a natural domed room that children and gardens alike make use of.
Contorted Branching: The twisting, interlocking framework is the tree's strongest feature in winter.
Dense Shade: Large rough leaves overlap to create genuinely deep summer shade under a small canopy footprint.
Set Height: Because it does not produce a leader of its own, final height is largely determined at the graft, keeping it predictable near buildings.
Pest Watch: Elm leaf beetle is active across south eastern Australia and should be monitored from late spring, as heavy infestation strips the canopy.
Ideal Applications
Lawn Specimen: Standing alone in turf so the full weeping dome can be seen from every side.
Heritage and Period Gardens: A long-established feature tree of Victorian-era garden design.
Shade Over a Seat: Positioned so a bench sits inside the canopy skirt.
Formal Entry: A matched pair either side of a wide gate or drive on a cool climate property.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening tree; allow 5m if grouped
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture retentive loam; it tolerates clay and brief wetness far better than drought or shallow sandy soil
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice weekly through the first two summers, as elms respond poorly to drying out while establishing. Mulch to the canopy edge, keep turf clear of the trunk, and prune only in late winter to lift the skirt where you need clearance beneath.
