Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Camperdown Elm (Short Standard) - Ulmus glabra ‘Camperdownii’
'Camperdownii' has no leader of its own. Every plant is a graft of a weeping wych elm mutation worked onto an upright elm stem, and the branches then tumble outward and down to build a dome. On a short standard the graft sits low, so the finished plant becomes a compact green mound rather than a shelter you walk beneath, which suits gardens where the weeping form is meant to be read as an object. Large, rough textured leaves turn clear yellow before falling, and the bare winter framework is Ulmus glabra at its most sculptural.
Why Camperdown Elm
Grafted Form: The crown is entirely determined by the graft height, so the shape is predictable from day one.
Dome Habit: Branches arch out and down into a tight umbrella that needs no shaping.
Autumn Colour: Foliage turns a clean butter yellow in cool districts before dropping.
Winter Silhouette: The contorted, cascading branch structure is a feature in its own right once bare.
Cool Climate Suitability: Well suited to Victoria, Tasmania, the tablelands and the Adelaide Hills.
Ideal Applications
Lawn Specimen: A single plant on turf shows the dome shape from every angle.
Formal Entry Pair: Matched plants flanking a path or gate give symmetry at a low height.
Heritage Garden: A period appropriate choice for Victorian era gardens in southern Australia.
Large Container: The restrained size of the short standard suits a substantial pot or planter box.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m if planted in a row, though it is not a hedging plant
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to late winter while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture retentive loam with reliable drainage, tolerant of a wide pH range
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, more often in inland heat. Mulch clear of the trunk, remove any suckers appearing below the graft union, and watch for elm leaf beetle in the southern states.
