Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Camperdown Elm (Standard) - Ulmus glabra ‘Camperdownii’
Worked onto a straight stem, the Camperdown elm makes a living umbrella: stiff branches arch out from the graft then fall vertically to the ground, forming a dome you can walk inside. Ulmus glabra ‘Camperdownii’ is a weeping mutation of the wych elm that never grows a leader, so its final height is the graft height plus a little, and its spread is what changes over time. Large rough textured leaves fill the dome densely from spring to autumn.
Why Camperdown Elm
Walk in canopy: The curtain of branches reaches the ground and encloses a shaded room beneath the tree.
Height is fixed: Because it cannot grow a leader, it will never overtake a small garden or reach eaves.
Textured foliage: Big asymmetric leaves with a sandpaper surface give heavy summer shade.
Winter architecture: The bare weeping framework is as much of a feature as the summer canopy.
Longevity: Grafted specimens have been standing in Australian gardens for well over a century.
Ideal Applications
Lawn centrepiece: Set in open turf where the full skirt can develop without obstruction.
Shade over a seat: A bench or table inside the dome makes use of the enclosed space.
Heritage and period gardens: Fits Victorian and Federation era plantings where it was traditionally used.
Small park focal point: Reads as a distinct object at the end of a path or lawn.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Winter while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep fertile loam, moisture retentive but well drained; tolerates clay loam and a range of pH
Establishment Care: Water deeply weekly through the first two summers and keep the mulched circle at least as wide as the eventual skirt. Remove any suckers from the rootstock as they appear, and thin the interior of the dome every few years so air moves through and the inner branches do not die out.
