Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Camperdown Elm (Tall Standard) - Ulmus glabra ‘Camperdownii’
Grafted high on the stock, at around head height, the tall standard lets the weeping branches of Ulmus glabra 'Camperdownii' fall clear of the ground and create a domed green room you can walk into. It is the traditional Victorian era lawn tree, and it still does something no other small deciduous tree manages: a solid living umbrella through summer, then a cage of angular bare branches all winter. Choose the tall form wherever people will sit or pass beneath the canopy.
Why Camperdown Elm
High Graft: The elevated union lifts the whole weeping crown above head height from the outset.
Walk Under Canopy: Branches curtain to the ground at the edges while leaving usable space inside.
Seasonal Change: Deep summer shade, yellow autumn colour and an open winter frame that lets light back in.
Restrained Spread: Grows outward slowly, so the footprint stays predictable over decades.
Heritage Character: Instantly recognisable in older Australian gardens and public parks.
Ideal Applications
Lawn Centrepiece: The single best use, where the full dome can be seen and entered.
Seating Shade: A bench set beneath the canopy makes use of the enclosed space.
Driveway Turning Circle: A contained crown that will not outgrow a circular bed.
Garden Restoration: The correct choice when replanting a nineteenth century garden layout.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m if planted in a row, though it is not a hedging plant
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to late winter while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, moisture retentive soil that drains freely, from sandy loam to improved clay
Establishment Care: Water deeply weekly through the first two summers and mulch a wide ring clear of the trunk. Stake the standard stem for the first two years so wind does not rock the graft, and keep the trunk free of suckers.
