Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Weeping Elm - Ulmus glabra ‘Pendula’
Grafted high onto a straight stem, this elm makes a living umbrella. Ulmus glabra ‘Pendula’ produces stiff, almost horizontal branches that spread far wider than the tree is tall and then weep at the tips, forming a flat topped dome with a dark green cave beneath it. Large sandpapery leaves cast heavy summer shade, and the whole structure drops bare in winter to reveal a tiered branch framework that is arguably the better half of the display.
Why Weeping Elm
Umbrella Form: Horizontal branching creates a genuine sheltered space underneath, not just a canopy overhead.
Winter Silhouette: The bare tiered framework is sculptural enough to be a feature in its own right.
Dense Shade: Large rough textured leaves overlap to give some of the deepest summer shade of any small deciduous tree.
Controlled Height: Because the weeping form has no leader, mature height stays modest and predictable near buildings.
Soil Tolerance: Elms accept compacted, alkaline and urban soils that trouble maples and beech.
Ideal Applications
Lawn Specimen: Sited alone in open lawn so the full spread and the space beneath can be appreciated.
Shade Over Seating: Planted beside a terrace or bench where the low canopy encloses the space.
Heritage And Period Gardens: A staple of Victorian era gardens across Melbourne, Adelaide and the tablelands.
Children's Garden: The low reaching branches and shaded interior make an instantly usable play space.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 7 to 9m in a row, though it is not a screening tree by nature
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m clear of structures and other canopies
Best Planting Season: Winter into early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across loam, clay loam and alkaline soils provided drainage is reasonable. Best growth on deep moist soil
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers and keep turf cleared to the drip line so the shallow roots are not competing. Stake the standard firmly for the first two years because the wide head catches wind, mulch to 75mm clear of the trunk, and watch for elm leaf beetle in Victoria, South Australia and the ACT, where it skeletonises foliage from late spring.
