Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Variegated English Elm - Ulmus procera ‘Argenteovariegata’
This is the cream splashed form of the English elm, where every leaf is marbled and streaked with white so that the whole canopy reads pale silver from a distance. It is noticeably less vigorous than the plain green Ulmus procera, which is a virtue: you get the elm outline and the elm shade at a size a suburban or acreage garden can actually carry. Plant it where the light will hit the canopy and the variegation earns its keep all through the growing season.
Why Variegated English Elm
Luminous Canopy: The white marbled foliage lifts dark corners and stands out against a green backdrop from a long way off.
Reduced Vigour: Variegated wood grows more slowly than the species, keeping the mature tree to a more workable size.
Tough Root System: Elms tolerate compacted soil, clay, wind and periods of dry that would set back most feature trees.
Dense Summer Shade: The canopy closes over to give genuine relief on a lawn or paved area.
Winter Framework: Once bare, the fine arching branch structure is one of the better deciduous silhouettes.
Ideal Applications
Lawn Specimen: Placed on open turf where the whole variegated canopy can be read at once.
Acreage and Rural Shade: Provides stock and vehicle shade on properties with room to absorb root suckering.
Contrast Planting: Set against dark evergreens such as conifers or lilly pilly, the pale foliage does the work of a light source.
Heritage Garden Restoration: Suits older homes in cool temperate districts where elms are part of the established character.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m in a rural windrow
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 12m, and keep well clear of paving, pipes and footings
Best Planting Season: Winter and early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across clay, loam and alkaline soils. Prefers deep moist ground but will not tolerate permanent waterlogging.
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers so the tree is not forced to sucker in search of moisture. Mulch widely, and be aware that English elm throws root suckers well away from the trunk, so plan on mowing or removing them for the life of the tree; watch for elm leaf beetle damage in Victorian and South Australian districts.
