Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Seychelles Stilt Palm - Verschaffeltia splendida
Verschaffeltia splendida is the palm collectors chase: a solitary crown of huge, glossy, undivided leaves held above a trunk that stands on a visible cone of stilt roots. Young plants are armed with black spines and carry entire paddle shaped leaves that split and shred into ribbons as the palm matures, which is exactly the look designers want in a tropical courtyard. It is a rainforest species, so it asks for warmth, humidity, shelter from wind and no frost at all.
Why Seychelles Stilt Palm
Stilt Root Cone: The trunk lifts on a visible tripod of prop roots, an architectural feature few palms offer.
Entire Leaf Blades: Juvenile and semi mature leaves are broad and undivided, giving bold uninterrupted foliage mass.
Rarity: An endemic of the Seychelles, seldom seen in Australian gardens and immediately recognisable to anyone who knows palms.
Shade Adapted: Grows in filtered light beneath canopy, so it suits enclosed courtyards and atriums.
Clean Solitary Trunk: Single stemmed and non suckering, it stays exactly where it is planted.
Ideal Applications
Tropical Courtyard Centrepiece: Sheltered walls give the humidity and wind protection it needs while showing off the stilt roots.
Rainforest Understorey Planting: Sits beneath an established canopy alongside licuala, calamus and gingers.
Resort and Poolside Feature: The broad entire leaves read well from a distance and shed little litter.
Atrium and Conservatory: Well suited to warm, bright, protected interior spaces in cooler cities.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening palm. In a grouped rainforest planting, 3 to 4m.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m as a solitary specimen
Best Planting Season: Late spring through summer, into warm moist soil
Soil & Drainage: Deep, rich, organic soil that stays moist but drains freely. It will not accept dry sand, compacted clay or stagnant water.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone constantly moist and the surrounding air humid, misting or overhead watering in dry weather. Mulch heavily with leaf litter or composted bark, and site out of hot drying wind, which tears and browns the broad leaves faster than anything else.
