Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sweet Viburnum - Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki
For sheer speed to a dense, tall, glossy screen, little competes with this one. Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki carries big leathery leaves of a deep polished green on a naturally branching frame, so a row closes over in two or three seasons and then holds a flat clipped face indefinitely. Fragrant white flower panicles appear in early summer, followed by red fruit that darkens to black, though most plantings are grown for the foliage alone.
Why Sweet Viburnum
Screening Speed: Reliably fast, closing gaps in a boundary planting well inside three years.
Leaf Quality: Large glossy leaves reflect light and give a hedge visible depth rather than a flat green wall.
Clipping Response: Reshoots readily from old wood, so an overgrown hedge can be cut back hard and rebuilt.
Fragrance: Creamy panicles in late spring and early summer carry a sweet scent through the garden.
Site Flexibility: Performs in full sun and in part shade, which lets a single hedge run from an open lawn into the shadow of a building without changing character.
Ideal Applications
Boundary Hedge: The default choice for a 2 to 4m clipped privacy hedge in temperate and subtropical gardens.
Informal Screen: Left unclipped as a soft billowing mass to hide a fence or service area.
Windbreak Planting: Dense structure filters wind across exposed suburban blocks.
Pleached Panels: Trained on a frame with a clear trunk below for above fence screening on tight boundaries.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m for a clipped hedge, 1.5m for an informal screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m as individual shrubs
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring in most districts, avoiding heavy frost periods
Soil & Drainage: Most soils suit provided drainage is adequate. Improve heavy clay with gypsum and compost and plant slightly proud of grade
Establishment Care: Water two to three times weekly through the first summer, since patchy watering along a hedge line shows up permanently as uneven height. Mulch the full run to 75mm and tip prune lightly in the first year rather than letting plants race up, which builds the dense low branching a good hedge depends on.
