Mariesii Doublefile Viburnum - Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum ‘Mariesii’
The value of ‘Mariesii’ is its architecture. Branches grow in strictly horizontal tiers, and in mid spring the lacecap flower heads sit along the top of each tier in two rows, so the whole shrub reads as layered white shelves. Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum ‘Mariesii’ is deciduous, with deeply pleated veined leaves that turn wine red in autumn, and it needs to be seen side on rather than crammed into a hedge line.
Why Mariesii Doublefile Viburnum
Tiered branching: Horizontal layering is genetic, not trained, and develops without any pruning.
Doublefile flowering: Flat white lacecaps line the upper side of each branch, which is why the tiers read so clearly.
Autumn colour: Pleated leaves turn burgundy to wine red before dropping, unusual for a viburnum.
Bird food: Red fruit ripening to black follows the flowers on established plants.
Low maintenance: Largely free of pests and diseases in Australian gardens and needs no annual pruning.
Ideal Applications
Standalone lawn shrub: Open ground around it lets the horizontal layers show, which is the whole point.
Woodland edge: Sits naturally at the transition between canopy trees and open garden.
Against a plain wall: A pale rendered or masonry backdrop makes the tiers and white flowers legible.
Under deciduous trees: Copes with dappled summer light and takes advantage of open winter canopy.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m; note it is a layered specimen shrub rather than a true hedging plant
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or late winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Humus rich, moisture retentive and free draining, slightly acid to neutral
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist through the first two summers, as flowering suffers badly after a dry spell in late summer when buds are forming. Mulch 75mm with composted bark and avoid shortening branch tips, since cutting the horizontal leaders destroys the tiered habit permanently.
