Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sandankwa Viburnum - Viburnum suspensum
Where the more common Viburnum odoratissimum quickly gets away from you, sandankwa stays a manageable shrub. Viburnum suspensum carries thick, leathery, dark green leaves on a naturally dense frame, flowers with small fragrant white and pink-flushed panicles in late winter and spring, and takes clipping without going bare in the middle. It also holds up in shade better than most evergreen hedging shrubs, which makes it useful down the shaded side of a house.
Why Sandankwa Viburnum
Restrained Height: Matures around two to three metres, so it makes a hedge that stays a hedge without constant reduction pruning.
Shade Performance: Keeps density in half shade where lilly pillies and photinias thin out.
Winter Fragrance: Small clusters of white flowers flushed pink release a light sweet scent in late winter.
Leaf Substance: Thick leathery leaves resist wind damage and look glossy rather than tired through summer.
Clipping Response: Reshoots readily from old wood, so an overgrown plant can be brought back rather than replaced.
Ideal Applications
Boundary Hedge: A dependable clipped or informal hedge in the 1.5 to 2.5m range for fence line and property division.
Shaded Side Passage: One of the better evergreen screens for narrow, low-light spaces beside a building.
Understorey Massing: Planted in blocks beneath established trees for evergreen structure at eye level.
Courtyard Backdrop: A dark, even green wall behind pale-flowered perennials or sculpture.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring in warm temperate districts, avoiding midwinter in cold areas
Soil & Drainage: Moist but free-draining soil enriched with organic matter, slightly acidic to neutral; it will not accept prolonged wet feet
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly for the first eight weeks and weekly through the first summer, easing off once new growth appears. Mulch to 75mm, feed with a balanced slow release fertiliser in early spring, and give the first light trim once the plants have put on a season of growth to encourage branching low down.
