Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Laurustinus - Viburnum tinus
Laurustinus flowers when almost nothing else does, opening tight pink buds into flat white heads from late autumn right through winter and into spring. Viburnum tinus is a dense evergreen shrub with dark leathery leaves that clips readily, which is why it has been the default cool climate hedge for well over a century in Australian gardens. It tolerates shade, coastal exposure, frost and neglect, and follows the flowers with metallic blue black berries that hold on the bush for months.
Why Laurustinus
Winter Flowering: The main display runs through the coldest months, filling the gap that most gardens have.
Shade Tolerance: It stays dense and flowers reasonably even in part shade under established trees.
Clipping Response: Small leaves and tight branching let it be sheared into a formal hedge with a clean face.
Metallic Berries: Blue black fruit with a metallic sheen follows the flowers and lasts well into the warmer months.
Toughness: Frost, coastal wind, poor soil and dry shade are all handled without special treatment.
Ideal Applications
Formal Hedging: The classic use, clipped to between 1 and 2m along paths, drives and boundaries.
Shaded Screening: One of the few dense evergreens that will screen reliably in a shaded side garden.
Backdrop Planting: A dark green mass behind perennial borders makes lighter flowers read more strongly.
Coastal Gardens: It stands up to salt laden wind in exposed southern coastal positions.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 1m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable to most soils including clay and limestone based ground, provided it drains; avoid permanently wet sites
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer so the shallow fibrous roots do not dry out. Mulch along the whole hedge line, and trim immediately after the main flowering finishes rather than in autumn, since autumn pruning removes the developing flower buds.
