Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
English Walnut - Juglans regia
The English or Persian walnut is a long-lived shade tree that happens to produce a crop. Juglans regia develops a broad, domed canopy on a pale grey trunk, casts heavy summer shade, and given deep soil and genuine winter chill it will bear nuts for generations. It is a tree for cool temperate Australia, from the tablelands and the Adelaide Hills through central Victoria and Tasmania, and it needs real space, because a mature walnut is a large tree and its roots and leaf litter suppress many plants growing beneath it.
Why English Walnut
Dual Purpose: A serious shade tree that also produces an edible crop in autumn, which few ornamentals do.
Longevity: Well-sited trees remain productive and structurally sound for many decades.
Canopy Quality: Large pinnate leaves cast dense, cool shade and release a distinctive scent when crushed.
Timber and Form: A straight pale trunk with a wide domed head gives strong parkland character.
Cold Climate Suitability: Winter chill that limits many fruit trees is exactly what this species needs.
Ideal Applications
Homestead Shade Tree: The traditional tree beside a country house, combining shade with a useful harvest.
Orchard and Small Farm: Planted in rows on deep alluvial soils for nut production.
Parkland Specimen: A single mature tree on open ground shows the full domed silhouette.
Windbreak Interior: Useful as an inner row in a mixed shelterbelt on deep soil, though not on the exposed edge.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 8 to 10m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 12 to 15m
Best Planting Season: Winter while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free-draining, fertile loam with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH; shallow, rocky or waterlogged ground will stunt the tree and it is very intolerant of root rot
Establishment Care: Give deep, infrequent irrigation through the first four summers so roots follow the moisture downwards rather than sitting near the surface. Keep the trunk clear of mulch and grass, and remember that the roots and fallen leaves release juglone, which inhibits tomatoes, apples and many shrubs planted within the drip line.
