Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Cotton Palm - Washingtonia filifera
Washingtonia filifera is the heavier, stouter of the two Washingtonia fan palms, with a thick columnar trunk that can approach a metre across and a broad crown of grey-green costapalmate fronds trailing white cotton-like threads between the segments. It comes from desert oases in the American south-west, so it is built for dry heat, hard sun and cold nights, and it is noticeably more frost tolerant and more drought tolerant than the Mexican fan palm. It performs best inland and in dry-summer climates rather than in the humid tropics.
Why Cotton Palm
Massive trunk: A trunk far thicker than most fan palms gives serious visual weight at ground level.
Cotton filaments: White threads hang between the frond segments, the feature the common name refers to.
Desert hardiness: Handles extreme summer heat, reflected glare and long dry periods once established.
Frost tolerance: Among the more cold-hardy of the large palms, suiting inland districts with real winter frost.
Grey-green fronds: Cooler foliage tone than the Mexican fan palm, which reads well against warm-toned masonry.
Handle with care: The leaf stalks carry hooked spines along both margins for their full length. Wear gloves and eye protection when trimming, and allow clearance beside driveways, paths and pool edges where a frond could be walked into.
Ideal Applications
Inland and dry-climate gardens: Thrives where humidity is low and summers are hot and dry.
Large-scale entry features: The thick trunk suits broad frontages, roundabouts and estate driveways.
Mediterranean and desert-style landscapes: Works with olives, agave and gravel groundplanes.
Avenue planting: Even trunks and consistent crowns make orderly rows on wide verges.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m for a close grove, allowing for the trunk girth
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Late spring to summer while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining sandy or gravelly soil; tolerates alkalinity and poor fertility but not sustained wet ground
Establishment Care: Water regularly for the first summer to settle the root ball, then reduce to occasional deep soaks as the palm takes hold. Brace tall stock for the first season, keep mulch off the trunk base, and expect a dead frond skirt to build up unless it is trimmed off periodically.
