Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mexican Fan Palm - Washingtonia robusta
Washingtonia robusta is the tall, slender fan palm that lines boulevards across Perth, Adelaide and coastal New South Wales: a narrow trunk running straight up to a modest crown of bright green costapalmate fronds. It is the fastest of the large fan palms and one of the toughest, tolerating drought, heat, poor soil and coastal wind once established. Be deliberate about placement, because this palm genuinely reaches 20 metres and more, and it is a poor choice under powerlines or hard against a single-storey roofline.
Why Mexican Fan Palm
Height and speed: The quickest way to get real vertical scale into a landscape, adding significant trunk each year in warm districts.
Narrow trunk: A slim 25 to 40cm trunk means a large palm on a small ground footprint.
Drought hardiness: Once established it needs very little supplementary water, even through hot dry summers.
Coastal tolerance: Handles salt-laden wind and sandy soil across most of the Australian coastline.
Uniform habit: Consistent trunk and crown make it reliable in rows, which is why it dominates avenue planting.
Handle with care: The leaf stalks carry hooked spines along both margins for their full length. Wear gloves and eye protection when trimming, and allow clearance beside driveways, paths and pool edges where a frond could be walked into.
Ideal Applications
Avenue and driveway rows: Evenly spaced palms create the classic long formal approach.
Resort and pool landscapes: High crowns clear sightlines while still framing the sky.
Large-scale entry statements: A group of three at staggered heights gives immediate presence on a big frontage.
Coastal estate planting: Suits exposed beachfront blocks where salt and wind rule out most trees.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a close palm colonnade
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 8m for a formal avenue
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Almost any free-draining soil including poor sand; tolerates alkalinity and low fertility
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week for the first summer, then taper to occasional deep soaks as roots take hold. Keep fronds tied and the palm braced for the first few months on tall stock, and site it well clear of powerlines, eaves and services given the eventual height.
