Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Violet Westringia - Westringia glabra
Most gardeners know westringia as the grey coastal rosemary, so this one comes as a surprise. Westringia glabra has smooth deep green leaves rather than felty grey ones, and its flowers are a clear mauve violet with darker spotting in the throat, carried in a heavy spring flush and then on and off for much of the year. It comes from rocky open forest in Victoria and New South Wales, which is why it takes dappled shade far better than its coastal cousins.
Why Violet Westringia
Flower Colour: True mauve violet flowers, a deeper and more saturated tone than the pale mauve and white forms in common use.
Smooth Green Foliage: Glossy hairless leaves in whorls give a fresher, greener look than the grey westringias.
Shade Tolerance: Its natural habitat under open eucalypt canopy means it flowers acceptably in half a day of sun.
Long Season: A strong spring peak followed by scattered flowering through the rest of the year.
Pruning Response: Reshoots freely from stems after a trim, so it holds a rounded shape without going woody.
Ideal Applications
Low Native Hedge: Clipped into a soft informal border at 0.8 to 1.2m along a path or driveway.
Mixed Native Beds: Fills the middle layer between grevillea, correa and native grasses.
Dry Garden Understorey: Grows happily beneath established eucalypts where irrigation is limited.
Pollinator Planting: Long flowering habit supports native bees through much of the year.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m for a continuous low hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.5m as individual shrubs
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gravelly soils are ideal. On clay, plant into a raised mound, and avoid phosphorus rich fertilisers
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first six months to get roots out of the pot mix, then only during extended dry spells, since overwatering an established plant does more harm than drought. Mulch lightly with a coarse native mulch and tip prune after the main spring flush each year to keep the bush dense to the ground.
