Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
White Sapote - Casimiroa edulis
Casimiroa edulis comes from the highlands of Mexico and Central America, which is why it handles light frost and cooler nights far better than the tropical fruit trees it is usually shelved beside. It grows into a broad, spreading evergreen with distinctive palmate leaves and produces apple-sized green fruit whose flesh is sweet, soft and custard-like. It is one of the few genuinely subtropical fruit trees that will crop in Sydney, Perth and warmer parts of Adelaide as well as in Queensland.
Why White Sapote
Cool Tolerance: More frost tolerant than mango, custard apple or lychee once established, widening where it can be grown.
Heavy Cropping: Mature trees can carry very large crops, often more than a household can eat fresh.
Handsome Foliage: Glossy compound leaves with five to seven leaflets give it a distinctive, tropical look year round.
Deep Shade: The dense spreading crown throws genuinely useful shade over a lawn or outdoor area.
Vigorous Establishment: Grows away quickly on a good site, reaching bearing size faster than most tree fruit.
Ideal Applications
Backyard Shade and Fruit: Serves as the main shade tree on a suburban block while producing an edible crop.
Subtropical Food Forest: Forms the upper canopy layer above citrus, bananas and understorey edibles.
Rural Windbreak Interior: Useful inside a shelter belt where its brittle wood is protected from the worst gusts.
Coastal Gardens: Tolerates coastal conditions provided it is set back from direct salt-laden wind.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m, though it is a shade tree rather than a screening plant
Spacing (feature/avenue): 7 to 9m, and keep it well clear of paths and structures
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn, avoiding frost periods in marginal districts
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free-draining loam; will not tolerate waterlogged or shallow compacted soils
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers to build a strong root plate, since the tree is fast above ground and can outrun its roots. Mulch to 100mm, stake young trees against wind because the wood is brittle, and shorten leading growth early to keep the crown low and pickable.
