White Japanese Wisteria - Wisteria floribunda ‘Alba’
Length is what separates Japanese wisteria from the rest, and ‘Alba’ is the white form of it. Wisteria floribunda carries slender racemes that on an established, well pruned plant reach 30 to 60cm, opening progressively from the base to the tip so the display unfolds over two or three weeks rather than flashing over in days. White reads cooler and cleaner than mauve against dark timber or charcoal steel, and it sits comfortably in a restrained planting palette where purple would dominate.
Why White Japanese Wisteria
Raceme Length: Long pendulous tassels are the signature of the species and need a pergola with real height to be seen properly.
Sequential Opening: Flowers open from the top of the raceme downwards, which stretches the flowering window considerably.
Colour Discipline: Pure white works with grey, charcoal and natural timber where the mauve forms can fight the architecture.
Perfume: Lightly but genuinely fragrant, strongest in the warmth of late morning.
Longevity: Correctly framed and pruned, a single plant is a fifty year proposition rather than a decade of interest.
Toxicity warning: The seeds and pods are toxic if eaten, so site it away from play areas.
Ideal Applications
High Pergola: A frame at 2.4m or above lets the full raceme hang without being brushed by passers by.
Driveway Arbour: Trained over a wide arch it delivers a spring tunnel and dense summer shade.
Balcony Balustrade: Run horizontally along a rail, the flowers hang down over the facade below.
Feature Standard: Held on a stout stake as a weeping tree, the long racemes sweep almost to the ground.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m along a beam or wire run
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m between repeated plants
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free draining loam of moderate fertility, neutral to slightly acidic. Avoid soggy ground and avoid over improving with manure
Establishment Care: Water deeply and infrequently through the first two summers, mulching to 75mm and keeping the mulch off the stem. Japanese wisteria stems twine clockwise, so start them the right way around a post, tie the leaders in until they are woody, and begin the twice yearly summer and winter spur pruning routine from year three to force flowering wood.
