Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Kuchi Beni Japanese Wisteria - Wisteria floribunda ‘Kuchi Beni’
The Japanese name of this selection translates roughly as rouged lips, and it describes the flower exactly. Each pea flower on the raceme is white or palest cream with a distinct pink to mauve flush on the tips of the keel, so a raceme of Wisteria floribunda ‘Kuchi Beni’ reads white from a distance and two toned up close. It is the choice when a pure white form looks too plain and a full purple form looks too loud.
Why Kuchi Beni Japanese Wisteria
Two Tone Flower: White petals tipped with pink give the raceme depth that a single colour form cannot match.
Raceme Length: Tassels commonly reach 40 to 50cm on well pruned mature plants.
Fragrance: Sweetly scented, and best appreciated under a pergola where the perfume is held.
Reliable Flowering: A long established and widely grown Japanese selection with a dependable spring display once spur pruning is underway.
Woody Framework: The trunk gnarls attractively with age and becomes a feature in its own right through winter.
Toxicity warning: The seeds and pods are toxic if eaten, so site it away from play areas.
Ideal Applications
Timber Pergola: The pale flowers glow against oiled hardwood and stained beams.
Garden Archway: A pair trained over an arch meet in the middle within a few seasons.
Pool Fence Softening: Trained on wire above a compliant fence line it adds height and seasonal colour.
Heritage Garden Restoration: A long grown cultivar that sits correctly in period gardens and Federation verandahs.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m along the support
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free draining soil, neutral to slightly acidic, of moderate rather than high fertility
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers to drive roots down, and mulch to 75mm kept clear of the trunk. Provide a support rated to carry a heavy mature vine, tie in the permanent arms early, and prune in midsummer and again in winter to build the short flowering spurs that produce the racemes.
