Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pink Japanese Wisteria - Wisteria floribunda ‘Longissima Pink’
Pink is the rarest colour break in wisteria, and this is the long racemed version of it. Sold in Australia as ‘Longissima Pink’ and elsewhere as ‘Rosea’, this selection of Wisteria floribunda produces pale shell pink flowers with slightly deeper violet toned keels, carried on the extended tassels the species is known for. Against a dark pergola or a stone wall it is a distinctly softer effect than the standard mauve.
Why Pink Japanese Wisteria
Uncommon Colour: Genuine pink wisteria is scarce, and it changes the whole character of a spring pergola.
Extended Racemes: Tassels of 45 to 60cm are achievable on an established plant that is spur pruned each year.
Subtle Bicolour: The darker keel tips give the pale flowers definition rather than letting them wash out.
Scent: Lightly perfumed, noticeable in still warm air under a covered frame.
Autumn Value: Foliage turns clear butter yellow before falling, giving a second season of interest.
Toxicity warning: The seeds and pods are toxic if eaten, so site it away from play areas.
Ideal Applications
Long Walkway Pergola: The extended racemes are seen at their best hanging into a walkway at height.
Feature over Water: Trained above a pond or pool the pale flowers reflect strongly.
Wire Trained Facade: Fanned flat on stainless wire it flowers hard against masonry with minimal projection.
Mixed Colour Pergola: Planted alongside a white or purple form it gives a graduated colour run down a single beam.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m along the support
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam, neutral to slightly acidic, of moderate fertility. Waterlogged clay is the one condition it will not tolerate
Establishment Care: Give it deep soakings rather than frequent light watering through the first two summers, and mulch to 75mm kept away from the collar. Build the permanent arms onto a structural support in the first three seasons, then hold it to a strict summer and winter pruning cycle, since an unpruned plant makes runners and very few flowers.
