Double Purple Japanese Wisteria - Wisteria floribunda ‘Violacea Plena’
This is the double flowered Japanese wisteria, grown in Japan for centuries and also circulated as ‘Yae kokuryu’ and ‘Black Dragon’. Each flower on the raceme of Wisteria floribunda ‘Violacea Plena’ is a tight violet purple rosette rather than a single pea shape, so the tassel looks densely packed and almost sculptural. Racemes are shorter than the single forms and it opens a little later, which is useful for extending a wisteria season.
Why Double Purple Japanese Wisteria
Double Rosettes: Multi petalled flowers give a heavier, more textured raceme than any single flowered wisteria.
Depth of Colour: Deep violet purple that holds its intensity rather than fading to grey mauve in hot sun.
Later Season: Opens after the single forms, so a mixed planting can stretch the display by two or three weeks.
Reduced Seeding: The doubled flowers rarely set the heavy velvet pods that other forms drop.
Compact Racemes: Shorter tassels of around 25 to 30cm suit lower pergolas and tighter courtyards.
Toxicity warning: The seeds and pods are toxic if eaten, so site it away from play areas.
Ideal Applications
Low Pergola: The shorter racemes hang clear of head height on frames where long tasselled forms would be in the way.
Courtyard Standard: Staked and headed, the dense flower clusters read well at close viewing distance.
Sequenced Planting: Paired with an early white form on the same structure it doubles the flowering window.
Container Feature: Its slightly more restrained habit tolerates a large planter better than the most vigorous forms.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m along the support
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam of moderate fertility, neutral to slightly acidic
Establishment Care: Water deeply and infrequently through the first two summers and mulch to 75mm, kept clear of the stem. Skip nitrogen fertiliser, tie the permanent framework onto a genuinely structural support, and spur prune in midsummer and winter, noting that double forms can be slower to reach full flowering than single forms so patience in the first few seasons is warranted.
